The Neviere Etna Route
This route is an original approach to visit Etna: combine nature and geology with history and uncommon local traditions.
This route is an original approach to visit Etna unconventionally: it combines nature and geology with history and uncommon local traditions.
In Sicily the collection, storage and use of the snow was “coded” at various levels, in a chain that started from “nivarolo“ the one who collected, preserved and worked the snow, and the “neviere”: existing places in nature or purpose-built or modified to be used for snow’s storage. The snow was used for preserving food or for medical use, but in many cases for pure pleasure and delight of the wealthy classes. You will know more about this “art”, as you will visit with torch and helmet some of the most significant “neviere” right around Etna.
Within Etna Park, it would be possibile to observe Etna from two opposite angles, crossing many of the typical Etna villages that arise on its slopes, rich in history and tradition, to get to the two starting points of the tours, Bronte and Sant’Alfio in the province of Catania.
Both routes are easy and pleasant, located at an altitude between 1300 and 1700 m above sea level, allowing you to enjoy a rich and varied countryside, walking immersed in woodlands with views that allow you to gaze out.
