Saturday 27th August, special edition of the Giostra del Saracino, one of the most fascinating folkloristic events in Italy.
Saturday 27th August 2016 the city of Arezzo, in occasion of the Jubilee of Mercy, hosts a special edition of Giostra del Saracino, one of the most fascinating folkloristic events in Italy.
Giostra del Saracino is a Medieval reenactment, featuring a rich and exciting scenery. The event takes place in Piazza Grande and involves the participation of the four neighborhoods of Arezzo. The oldest record of a Medieval tournament in Piazza Grande dates back to 1260, hold for the investiture of Ildebrandino Giratasca.
Started again in 1931, the modern joust involves a knight riding his horse while holding a lance in his hand. His goal is to hit the shield of Buratto (a puppet symbolizing the “King of the Indies”) without being hit by the mezzafusto, a Medieval weapon hold by the Buratto in its right hand.
The choreography of the Historical Parade takes place just before the tournament and includes 33 clarions, 11 drums, 1 portalabaro, 2 lucchi, as well as 39 sbandieratori (flag throwers) holding the 39 flags of the municipalities of the province of Arezzo and over 300 extras wearing Medieval costumes.
