Giostra della Quintana – The Rematch
Three months after the Sfida della Quintana, a Rematch. 14-15 September.
Three months after the Sfida (Challenge), on Sunday, September 15, 2019, Giostra della Quintana is back with the Rivincita (Rematch) and the same compelling development.
The ten districts of Foligno challenge each other again in the Medieval tournament taking place in the eight-shaped path of Campo de li Giochi, the ancient Foligno stadium.
The goal of the competition is to ride around the 750-metre track three times, as quickly as possible, trying to insert the lance into a ring hanging from a statue of Mars without getting any penalties. The ring gets smaller every time: 8 cm, 6 cm and 5 cm.
On the night before the joust (Saturday, September 14) it is possible to admire a wonderful Historical Parade featuring 800 extras wearing baroque costumes. Two weeks before the Giostra, the taverns of the 10 districts will stay open till the small hours. It will be possible to taste many traditional recipes of the 17th Century cuisine, prepared with products grown in the Foligno area. Many events will take place during these two weeks preceding the Giostra: playful competitions, games and historical re-enactments such as Bianca Notte Barocca.
The first record of Quintana dates back to 1448. In 1613, the Priors of the city wanted Quintana to become part of the Carnival celebrations. The modern version of Quintana dates back to 1946.
The term “Quintana” comes from the 5th road of Roman military camps, where the soldiers were trained in lance fighting.
