Good Friday processions in Scanno

March 29th, 2024- Two traditional Good Friday Processions

On Good Friday in Scanno, in  the province of l’Aquila, two processions remember the Passion and the Death of Christ:
– the Procession of the hooded penitents;
– the Procession of the Dead Christ.

The Procession of the hooded penitents is organized by the Brotherhood Madonna delle Grazie. The parade leaves in the morning, walks through the village’s streets and arrives at the sepulchres. The brothers, with the face covered by a white hood, continue per couple and with slow steps with very sad soundtracks such as “Il cristiano a pie della Croce” (the christian at the foot of the cross), to enhance the atmosphere of grief for the Death of Christ.

In the evening, the Procession of the Dead Christ parades with Miserere playing in the background.
