Fiera delle Grazie in Curtatone
In mid-August 2022, the International “Madonnari” Competition.
CANCELED IN 2021
The long-standing Fiera delle Grazie, this year on its 48th edition, takes place in mid-August, in the lovely Grazie district in Curtatone (area of Mantova) one of the most beautiful villages in Italy, which attracts over 100k visitors every year.
The fair, with its unique mix of art, culture and gastronomy, includes an International “Madonnari” Competition, which starts on the night of August 14 with the blessing of the artists’ chalks and ends on August 15, when the winner is announced. The about 200 Madonnari come from all over Italy and the world.
The Fiera delle Grazie is a combination of sacred and profane, as well as a huge outdoor art workshop that the people of Mantua love to attend. Other than the traditional walk to the Grazie churchyard, there is no shortage of music, entertainment and culture. Plus: a market, an amusement park, a pyro show, and the tasty, traditional cotechino.
The origins of the Fair can be traced back to 1425, when Gianfrancesco Gonzaga, Marquess of Mantua, declared the square in front of the church was a “market place”.
