Girifalco Archery – Massa Marittima

On August 14th. 24 crossbowmen challenge each other

On August 14th is taking place in Massa Marittima, in the Province of Grosseto the Balestro del Girifalco (Girifalco Archery), a traditional crossbow competition that occur also onthe fourth Sunday of May.

The Girifalco Archery starts with a a Medieval parade.

Then twenty-four crossbowmen, eight for each “Terziere” of the Tuscan town, challenge each other. The closer an arrow lands to the center of the target (called “corniolo”), the more points are awarded.
