From 19 to 29 August 2025, Nuoro, in the center of the Sardinia island, celebrates the Festa del Redentore (Redemeer feast), a religious feast created to pay homage to the statue of Christ the Redeemer located on the top of Mount Ortobene.
The origin of the Festa del Redentore, this year in its 125th edition, dates back to the Jubilee of 1900 when Pope Leo XIII wanted 19 images of Jesus the Redeemer to be placed on 19 peaks in Italy and in Sardinia it was chosen the Mount Ortobene (955 meters).
From August 19, many collateral events in the city as te real feast starts on Saturday.
On Saturday 23 evening, the celebration begins with a torchlight procession and a parade of traditional masks representing the Carnivale of Sardinia
On Sunday 24, preceding the religious feast of August 29, a great parade of traditional costumes and knights of Sardinia (about 3,000 participants!) brings the colorful variety of Sardinian traditions to the city. The parade, accompanied by songs, dances and music, passes through the heart of the city, ending in the churchyard of the Cathedral of Santa Maria della Neve, patron saint of the city.
On Sunday evening, the Regional Folklore Festival is held with the performance of dance groups, polyphonic choirs and tenor singing groups.
On the 29th at dawn, for the religious feast, the faithful go on a pilgrimage on foot from the Cathedral to reach the summit of Mount Ortobene where a solemn Mass is celebrated, accompanied by religious songs performed by the Nuoro polyphonic choirs.
