On February Sunday 1, Saturday and Sunday 14- 15, Sunday 22, and on March, Sunday 1, 2026, takes place in Cento, in the area of Ferrara, the first Carnival in the world (1993) to be combined with the Carnival in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil.
The Carnival of Cento dates back around 1615, when Giovanni Francesco Barbieri, known as “Guercino”, an Italian painter from Cento, depicted some big celebrations in his paintings.
The carnival symbol is Luigi Tasini’s mask, called “Tasi”, Its burning traditionally closes the event.
Allegorical float parades fill Cento streets, and the same happens 9,000 km away at Sambodromo, in Rio de Janeiro: since 1994, an Italian representative has participated in the well-known “Desfile das Campeãs”.
In exchange, every Sunday during Carnival, a Brazilian colored group of samba dancers and drummers exhibits in Cento, enlivening the atmosphere with samba carioca.
The program from 2 pm to 6:30 pm includes mask contests, food and wine events, sports competitions, didactic activities, performances and much more.
The proclamation of the best allegorical float, firework shows and the Traditional Tasi’s Testament, followed by the burning of the traditional mask mark the end of the Carnival.
