Good Friday Procession – Chieti
TO BE CONFIRMED. One of the oldest Easter traditions in Italy.
SUSPENDED. TO BE CONFIRMED
Friday 2 April 2021, the procession starts, as usual, at 7.00 pm from the Cathedral of San Giustino, and crosses the streets of the town with statues and seven “trophies”, the wooden sculptures representing the different phases of the passion of Christ.
The brothers of the twelve brotherhoods of the city participate in the procession, wearing small capes in different colors and hooded. They bear the symbols of the Passion, including the coffin of Christ followed by the statue of Our Lady of Sorrows.
For the occasion, the historic center is illuminated by torches and candles.
The procession is accompanied by the Miserere, sung by 160 choristers and composed in 1740 by Saverio Selecchy, chapel master of the cathedral.
The orchestra is conducted by maestro Peppino Pezzullo; the choir by Loris Medoro.
