Chestnut and Hazelnut Festival – Avella
On 12-14 October, eno-gastronomy and traditional products from Irpinia and Campania.
From Friday, October 12, to Sunday, October 14, 2018, Avella, in the Province of Avellino, hosts the Chestnut and Hazelnut Festival. For the 7th year running, the socio-cultural association “I Rami del Melo” celebrates Avella’s long-standing agricultural tradition, whose main protagonist has always been the hazelnut, as its name can attest. In Spanish, in Portuguese and in Occitan, ‘hazelnut’ is called ‘avellana’, ‘avelã’ and ‘avelana’ respectively, while in Latin ‘nux abellana’ means ‘hazel’.
The event starts on Friday evening, with stands and music entertainment.
On Saturday and Sunday morning, visitors can go on free guided tours of Avella’s wonderful historic sites: the Roman Tombs and Amphitheatre, the Norman Castle, Palazzo Ducale.
Starting at 8 pm, Pizzica and Taranta Night (Saturday) and Folk Night (Sunday), with music and dancing.
For the entire duration of the Festival, crafts market, and exhibition and tastings of traditional products from Irpinia and Campania, such as chestnuts, mushrooms, DOP olive oil. Moreover, in Piazza Municipio, tastings of excellent wines and craft beers, as well as local dishes: anchovy and nuts linguine, porcini mushrooms penne, wild boar ragu pasta, sausage and friarielli sandwich, beans, and cotechino, roasted chestnuts, hazelnut and chestnut desserts, nuts, raw and toasted hazelnuts.
